Demystifying Autism Assessments

Scheduling an autism assessment can be difficult. You have to find a clinic without an incredibly long wait list. You have to choose a clinic that will take the time to not only make the diagnosis but also explain what it means and how you should move forward. Obtaining the diagnosis is hard, and so many people are at a disadvantage because the clinics they go to do not provide them with the most accurate information or supportive care. You need more than just a diagnosis. You need to know what it means for yourself or your child diagnosed with autism.

What exactly happens in an autism assessment?

Our specialist Marcy Webb performs our autism assessments. She specifically uses Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-Second Edition (ADOS-2). This test is activity-based, and Marcy is able to evaluate communication skills, social interaction, and imaginative use of materials with the client. This particular test is considered to be the best way to diagnose autism since it allows the clinician to really observe the client’s behaviors.

How long does this process take?

Thankfully, we are able to provide assessments for our clients within 3-4 weeks of scheduling the appointment. During your first appointment, Marcy will conduct the ADOS-2 with the client, and it will generally take two hours. Afterwards, she will review the results, make a diagnosis if applicable, and write a thorough report for the client or the client’s guardians. Then, she schedules a second appointment which will take close to two hours as well. In total, she spends at least six hours on each client, and the entire process happens over the span of a few weeks depending on your availability for your appointments.

What’s different about an assessment at the Center for Connection and Wellness?

Most clinics only spend 1-3 hours with a client for the diagnosis process, and they often do not provide resources for the client after the diagnosis. Marcy is much more thorough! She spends at least six hours per client, and she carefully explains what their diagnosis means and what resources they can use to live a fulfilling life. Autism is a spectrum, and it is a unique experience for each person. Marcy understands that, and she doesn’t simply hand out one-size-fits-all reports on understanding a diagnosis.
